Synopsis

Over the past two decades, nanoscience and microelectronics have converged in ways that were once unimaginable. What began as curiosity-driven exploration of matter at the 1–100 nm scale has matured into a powerful technological engine that is reshaping the entire electronics landscape—from atomic-level hardware to large-scale energy and communication systems. This book was developed as a timely and coherent roadmap of that evolution, linking the fundamental physics of nanomaterials with the practical engineering requirements of commercial electronic devices.

Our intention has never been to add another broad, high-level survey to the literature. Instead, we invited contributors to reflect on two central questions:

  • What unique functionality do nanomaterials offer those conventional bulk materials cannot provide?
  • How must device design, fabrication, and system integration evolve to translate that functionality into manufacturable, reliable, and sustainable products?

With these questions as a framework, the book presents a continuous narrative that spans the journey from fundamental scientific principles to real-world implementation. Topics include the synthesis and characterization of emerging nanomaterials; their incorporation into high-performance electronic, sensing, photonic, and energy systems; the transition toward flexible and wearable platforms; and the challenges of integrating novel materials within established silicon infrastructure. The broader implications of sustainability, safety, and regulatory standards are also examined, recognizing that the future of nanomaterial electronics depends not only on performance metrics, but equally on societal responsibility and long-term viability.

This book is intended for graduate students entering the field, industry professionals engaged in technology-transfer and product development, and policy makers responsible for balancing innovation with risk management. Each chapter concludes with a concise “Key Take-aways & Outlook” segment that highlights what can be implemented immediately, what requires medium-term development, and what remains a long-term challenge.

We sincerely hope that this work serves as both a reference and an inspiration supporting continued progress toward scalable, responsible, and impactful nanomaterial-enabled electronics.

Usama Afzal, PhD researcher at the School of Microelectronics, Tianjin University, China, is a multidisciplinary expert specializing in microelectronics, environmental science, material statistics and physics. His research primarily focuses on material science, nanotechnology, and statistical system analysis, particularly emphasising the design and fabrication of advanced sensors for heavy metal detection. Afzal's innovative work has been widely published in prestigious journals including "Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical, ACS Sensors and Environmental Science and Pollution Research, making significant contributions to the fields of sensor technology and environmental analysis. In addition to his journal publications, he has authored books and book chapters that are recognized for their groundbreaking perspectives.
